I’m April Colby — a marketer, strategist, designer, and unapologetic “learn-it-all” who’s spent nearly two decades helping lawyers and law firms communicate more clearly, market more effectively and win more business.

My path into legal marketing wasn’t planned. In 2006, a stroke of dumb luck (and excellent timing) dropped me into the field, where I found mentors who shaped the way I think about business development, client service, and brand strategy. What started as a creative background in publishing and graphic design evolved into a career defined by data-driven storytelling, strategic planning, and helping lawyers grow their practices with confidence.

Before entering the legal world, I spent seven years in the publishing industry as a graphic designer — experience that still anchors my visual approach and fuels my belief that even the most complex ideas deserve compelling, clear communication. Since then, I’ve worked across the legal spectrum: large defense firms, mid-market full-service firms, and a plaintiff’s firm. Each environment sharpened a different skill, from high-level strategy to hands-on execution.

In my latest role as a Business Development Manager in a firm’s Philadelphia office, my focus has been helping the firm expand its market presence through strategic, targeted business development initiatives. Previously, I served as the Director of Business Development for a respected midsize, multi-practice firm known for its premier real estate practice — a role where I built and executed growth strategies to increase work.

Before that, I spent more than four years in Big Law supporting national real estate, zoning, and land use groups. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for the intersection of business strategy, legal nuance, and the operational realities of law firm life.

Across every role, one theme has held steady: I thrive at the intersection of creativity and analytics. I bring a designer’s eye, a strategist’s discipline, and a marketer’s curiosity to every project — helping lawyers articulate what they do, why it matters, and how to reach the clients they want most.
